Focus groups are traditionally carried out face-to-face with the attendees, but more and more they can also be carried out virtually, online.
The idea of the focus group is for attendees to talk through the topic, to agree and disagree with each other, to pick up on themes of others, to form alliances for or against a proposition or proposal or to show disinterest in an idea. They are a fantastic way of exploring a topic, a brand or a proposal as they allow themes to develop naturally and collaboratively.
Group discussions need to be directed and controlled by a skilled moderator whose task is to maintain the flow of discussion, yet keep discussion focused on the topics of interest.
