Telephone interviewing offers a cost effective solution for research covering a wide geographic region and enables large numbers of respondents, or a very specicifc groups of people, to be interviewed in a relatively short time.

Telephone interviewing using CATI involves responses being entered into a program at the time of interview. This allows for automatic complex questioning and routing instructions. It is managed centrally to allow monitoring of fieldwork progress and can give real time results. Paper based surveys are normally used for in-depth or less structured interviews.
